[Topic #1] Don't Mind the Man Behind the Curtain

No replies and only one new member whom I invited to the group...Yikes TT.TT; Not too encouraging, but I guess I'll put this up anyway.

So, the first topic I'd like to put out there for discussion is scientists and their role as far as fantastical creatures are concerned.  It was a conversation I had with my friend about a year back that led me to question their intentions.  I wrote a blog about it on MySpace which explains my thoughts best, so I'll post the relevant excerpts here.

Yin says that if [vampires, faeries, etc.] do exist, maybe it's better that we not see them, for their safety as well as our own...It is assumed that if a scientist were ever to get his hands on one of these fantastical creatures he'd want to pick it apart, dissect it, analyze it, wring everything from it that he possibly could.  I firmly believe in the creatures' existences and it suddenly occurred to me: what if scientists are there not to discover, but rather to conceal?...I think that they're somewhere out there.  And certain people are put in place to keep them hidden.

Maybe this just sounds like some sort of paranoid antagonism toward an institution that systemically wrings the mystery from life.  But I don't hate scientists; I just wonder.  And what if it's not just the scientists, but the government as well, joining forces to exercise complete control? Society seems to be in a pretty decent state compared to times passed, and maybe they'll go to any lengths to keep it that way.

Think back a few centuries.  There was once a time when vampires, wicked faeries, and sea serpents were as real in citizens' minds as anything else.  People hastened to their houses, fleeing from the darkness that crept over the land at the setting of the sun.  They yanked the eccentrics from their homes and burned them at the stake as witches.

But such notions have slowly faded from society, and with them have gone such periods as the Dark Ages and the Medieval Times.  There is order now.  People expect a certain normalcy from life and, though at times they wish for something more, are ultimately glad for its reliability.

Because what would become of us if a werewolf appeared in our midst? If the old fears of monsters lurking in the dark were suddenly so dreadfully real? I imagine the government and the scientific community fear there would be chaos, just as in times of old.  Mass paranoia, witch hunts, murder.

So they hide them away, these phantasmal creatures, against their will or through a treaty, and keep society complacent by placing reality in neat little boxes for them.  At least, that's what I see.  But what do you think?

Now, you have two possible methods of replying.  One would be through a comment, of course.  But if you'd like to reply via an entry of your own, that's fine.  Just please type out the topic number and title in italics at the very top of your entry.

And if you'd like to start a topic of your own, by all means go ahead.  It'd be fun to have more than one discussion going at once.  Just be sure to give your entry a number and title, as I have done with mine.

If anybody's out there, say something~! ^^;
